Music licence hike is bad news for weddings, club dances and nightclubs - Sunday People

Oct 2 2011 by Nigel Nelson, The People

MUSIC licences for discos and pubs are to be hiked by thousands of pounds.

The increase is bad news for fund-raisers, club dances, weddings, pubs and nightclubs.

It is good for Simon Cowell, whose Syco Music company has signed many top recording stars.

Bills for a typical wedding bash will soar from 30 to 380. Pubs which can now pay as little as 8 a night will have to fork out around 10,000 a year up front for a public performance licence.

The fee for nightclubs will zoom from 167 to a mind-boggling 6,667 for each event.

Clubs are expected to raise entry and drink fees to meet the costs.

Kate Nicholls, of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers, said: These increases are known as the Simon Cowell Tax because he will be one of the biggest beneficiaries.

The charges are collected by Phonographic Perform-ance Ltd on behalf of 5,750 record companies and 45,000 artists. Its income rose 12million to 143million last year.
