Rochester has always been a lacrosse hotbed, and the temperature is rising.

Roberts Wesleyan announced Tuesday it is joining the East Coast Conference when it moves up to NCAA Division II for the 2012-13 academic year. The ECC is a men's lacrosse powerhouse, putting a team in the NCAA Division II championship for seven consecutive years.

The most recent champions were Mercyhurst (2011), C.W. Post (2010) and NYIT (2008).

Mercyhurst wasn't asked to return to the ECC because it doesn't field enough varsity programs in the conference.

Roberts coach Rocky Delfino is excited about the move to the ECC.

"It gives us a different niche for kids looking to go to Division II level," he says. "It's an opportunity for athletic scholarships."

Roberts is starting men's and women's lacrosse this year.

The NAIA doesn't sponsor lacrosse, so Roberts will be an independent team playing against Division II and III programs.

Delfino, a Fairport graduate, went 105-32 in nine seasons at Monroe Community College. He was named NJCAA Coach of the Year in 2005 after reaching the national championship.

Three-peat

Geneseo senior soccer forward Kelly Bergin has three consecutive game-winning goals against Nazareth since transferring as a sophomore. She netted the game-winner in overtime at Nazareth in 2009, scored the lone goal at Geneseo in 2010 and repeated her overtime heroics last week in a 2-1 win at Nazareth. She was named SUNYAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week.

Fisher reunion

The 1981 St. John Fisher football team, which won the national club championship, will reunite over the next four days.

Several members of the team will attend a dinner at Kearney Auditorium on the Fisher campus tonight, and a golf tournament will be played Friday at Ravenwood Golf Course in Victor.

There is an alumni tailgate party Saturday before and after the 1 p.m. Fisher-Hobart game and a Mass at Coleman Chapel on the Fisher campus on Sunday.

Ted Micca, an offensive lineman on that '81 team, has put together a 90-minute film chronicling the season called Winning It All, which will be shown tonight.
