After delivering a speech to hostile bankers at the London Annual City Dinner, George Osborne must have thought he was on more popular ground when he arrived to pick up the Poitician of the Year award from GQ magazine.
"It is a pleasure to win this award. Ive just come from addressing about 300 bankers in the City of London and it says something about my profession that I was still the most unpopular person in the room. It is a fine recognition," he said.
The chancellor then spolied his acceptance speech by delivering a vulgar joke suggesting that MPs were w-----s and the glossy men's lifestyle magazine was used as a teenage masturbation aid.
Im not sure who actually reads the politics pages of GQ magazine. I suspect they are the only pages that a teenage boy hasnt stuck together in reading the magazine. Some might say thats because the w-----s are on the page rather than reading them, Osborne told the celebrity audience.
The joke was met by jeers as host David Mitchelled: Thats lowered the tone hasnt it.
