Letter: Company CEO pay amounts aren't immoral - MLive.com

In his Sept. 1 letter, my friend Joe Benes claims excessive profit comes from the hard-workers pockets. Did Bill Gates make his billions off the backs of his poor workers? Or did he create many thousands of well-paying jobs?

Joe thinks CEOs receive immoral salaries and bonuses. Who decides what salary is immoral? What makes a salary immoral is not its amount but how it is gotten and how it is used.

The whole third world thinks Americans are greedy consumers of scarce resources. Joe, theres a parable in the Bible about envious workers who grumble to their employer about getting paid too little while other workers were paid too much. Look it up in Matthew 20.

I hear copious complaints about CEO salaries but very few about movie, rock and athlete celebrities who are paid astronomical figures, for what? Escape and entertainment? Hero worship?

If I think workers or executives in a certain company are paid too much for what they sell, I simply dont buy their products. Thats what free enterprise is all about. That works better than politicians deciding what people should earn or who should stay in business, rewarding constituents who keep them in power and punishing those out of favor. We get the corporations we bail out or buy from just as we get the politicians we vote for.
