R. Kelly's camp revealed this week that the singer had to undergo "emergency throat surgery." There aren't a lot of details available on the surgery yet, but it sounds pretty serious. The "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Trapped in the Closet" singer is laid up for the foreseeable future.

Obviously, the first question on many fans' minds is whether this will affect R. Kelly's immaculate voice. The short answer is yes--any throat surgery will take some serious recovery time. The good news is that many celebrities have undergone throat or vocal cord surgery in the past and have made full recoveries.

Here's a look at three other celebrities who have had to have throat surgery and how it affected their careers.

Steven Tyler - The "American Idol" judge and lead singer of Aerosmith called off tour dates in 2006 for an undisclosed medical condition. It's likely that it had something to do with his voice, as doctors advised Tyler to take time off to allow his voice to recover.

Tyler only took a week off, but it seems to have worked. Recently, Tyler's voice has sounded as good as ever. It's too bad he didn't take extra time off to give his wardrobe time to recover, however.

MCA of The Beastie Boys- Adam Yauch, who is better known as MCA of rap megagroup The Beastie Boys, has cancer in his left salivary gland. Treatment for the condition has affected the Beasties' release schedules, and despite some errant reports, MCA says he's still not cancer free.

Even so, the Beastie Boys' recent album, "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two" sounds great. MCA's arguably the best rapper in the group, and while his voice has always sounded gruff, he doesn't sound any worse on the new LP. Here's hoping for a full recovery before "Hot Sauce Committee Part One" is released (yes, they're being released in reverse order).

Rachael Ray - Daytime TV queen Rachael Ray is known for an effervescent personality and her scratchy, infectious voice. She underwent surgery to remove a benign cyst on her vocal cords in 2009. Representatives for Ray noted that the hardest part of recovery for her would be not speaking for a week. She's a very vocal lady, of course, but after her recovery period she returned to work, sounding as good as she ever did--how good that is, exactly, is up for debate.
