Yesterday, New York became the sixth and largest state in the country to recognize same-sex marriage. The first weddings took place just after midnight on July 24, just one month after the state passed marriage equality legislation. From Niagara Falls, where the first ceremony was performed, to Manhattan, where 659 couples picked up marriage licenses, it was a historic and celebratory day.

So its no surprise that entertainers like Ricky Martin and NKOTBSBs Jonathan Knight took to Twitter to share their excitement over the newly enacted legislation. Martin and Knight both added GLAAD's I Love New York button to their Twitter photos in recognition of marriage equality.

When the legislation passed in late June, celebrities like Alec Baldwin, Lindsay Lohan, Kathy Griffin, Elizabeth Banks and former NSYNC-er Lance Bass shared their excitement on their favorite social networking site. BIG BIG DAY FOR OUR FAMILIES 33-29 it passed!!!! Now lets educate people and make sure we make them feel comfortable with why this happened, Bass tweeted.

But, of course, it was native New Yorker and fervent LGBT rights advocate Lady Gaga who summed up our feelings perfectly with her tweet and twitpic.

Congratulations and good luck to all the happy couples!
