A HOST of stars have paid tribute to rocker Jani Lane after he was found dead on Thursday night.

The 47-year-old former lead singer of rock group Warrant was discovered in a Los Angeles-area hotel, TMZ reported.

Lane's body was found at the Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills, but no cause of death has been released.

Poison frontman Bret Michaels took to his personal Twitter page to express his grief at the loss of his fellow musician.

"We'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Jani Lane regarding their loss," he wrote. "Respectfully, Bret and all at MEGI (sic)."

Chris Jericho also tweeted about the tragic news. The wrestler counts Lane amongst the "best songwriters" of his era.

"Sad to hear about the passing of Jani Lane. Jani was a good guy and one of the best songwriters in the late 80s Dog Eat Dog-very underrated (sic)," he said.

Lane had a turbulent personal life and a history of alcohol-related arrests. The singer was taken into custody in June 2009 for reportedly crashing into a parked car. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanour DUI and was put on probation for three years. He was arrested for a similar incident a year later. He served 120 days behind bars.

Lane was the singer and main songwriter for Warrant, joining the band in 1986.

The American glam rock band is probably best known for their single Cherry Pie, which he wrote.

Lane also wrote several other hits for the group, including Heaven and Down Boys.
